Well, here you go folks… I’m Sgt. Sheri Tate and I am the new senior support coordinator for Durham Region. The ongoing joke when I first took over the spot was that I am the new and improved Sgt. Keating!<\/p>\n

All joking aside, Sgt. John did a great job and I know I have big shoes to fill. It is now my chance to make a difference, seize the moment, and help seniors in my community.<\/p>\n

I’ll start by telling you a bit about myself and my career as a police officer. I’m a busy mom of three children under the age of nine. My wonderful spouse is a police officer in the Toronto area and we love to talk shop and bounce ideas off each other on all the situations we deal with.<\/p>\n

To relieve stress and have time to myself, I teach yoga, Pilates, aqua aerobics, weight and cardio classes. I’ve also worked as a personal trainer from time to time and I do off-ice training for figure skaters. I’ve been a part of the fitness world since 1990 and I truly believe exercise is the key to staying young and mobile.<\/p>\n

In terms of my policing career, I was in the process to be hired by Toronto, OPP and Durham Regional Police Service. Of course, Durham Regional Police was my first choice and I was thrilled when they hired me in 1999. My parents worried about me becoming a police officer, but never held me back from my career choice. Growing up in the region and working here has been a great experience for me.<\/p>\n

I did my time on the road as a front line police officer for about six years learning the ropes. Then, I competed for a detective constable job and won a spot in 17 Division Criminal Investigations Bureau. At the end of 2008, I was promoted to sergeant.<\/p>\n

My late mother was so proud and, unfortunately, she didn\u2019t live to see me sworn in as a sergeant in 2009. I broke down during the ceremony because her death was so close to it.\u00a0 The chief had to buy me some time when I had to leave the room to compose myself. My one-year-old daughter at the time was toddling about and the chief joked she was the youngest recruit. It thankfully took the attention off me and helped me re-focus. I was truly grateful for that diversion.<\/p>\n

After being promoted, I was granted a detective position in 17 Division. There was a sergeant vacancy on the road and I was asked to fill in. Of course, I welcomed the challenge and new experience.\u00a0 By 2010, I was back to investigations in 17 Division, where I remained until becoming senior support coordinator.<\/p>\n

As a detective, I handled all of my own cases, which included everything except homicides.\u00a0 I did have the opportunity to be a part of a few homicide investigations where I learned so many things under their guidance.<\/p>\n

During the last four years as a detective, I focused my attention on fraud investigations. I assisted many seniors who were victims of various financial scams and theft by power of attorney. This experience will undoubtedly help me in my new job.\u00a0 Financial abuse is the number one form of elder abuse.<\/p>\n

In terms of learning on the job as the new senior support coordinator, I am fortunate to work with two highly intelligent women who have guided me since day one. Tammy Rankin is the senior safety advisor for the Region of Durham and she is recognized as an expert in her field. Jen Josephson is the senior response coordinator and she has worked diligently to reduce the calls to front line police officers where a criminal response is not required. With these two women at my side, I know I am in excellent hands whenever I have questions about how to best assist a senior in need with community supports.<\/p>\n
