Seniors will soon be able to stay more involved within the community thanks to the addition of 40 new seniors\u2019 centres coming throughout the province.<\/p>\n

Dipika Damerla, the minister of seniors affairs, made the announcement recently in Kitchener. The 40 new centres will help the province better meet the needs of the growing seniors\u2019 population, and will offer social and recreational programming such as exercise classes, transportation services, communal dining and health and wellness classes.<\/p>\n

\u201cHelping seniors stay connected, active and engaged has been shown to contribute to their overall health and well-being,\u201d says Daiene Vernile, MPP for Kitchener Centre. \u201cThis announcement addresses that need for a growing segment of our population.\u201d<\/p>\n

These new centres will add to the network of 263 Elderly Persons Centres across the province that serve more than 100,000 people. A call for proposal will be issued in early Fall 2017 to move forward with the new centres.<\/p>\n

The province recently passed legislation that, once proclaimed, will rename these centres as Senior Active Living Centres \u2013 rather than Elderly Persons Centres \u2013 to better reflect the vibrant diverse and active seniors across the province. This legislation will also help the centres better respond to community needs, build strong partnerships, strengthen their services and act as community hubs.<\/p>\n

According to the 2017 budget, the province is investing $8 million over three years to create the 40 new centres.<\/p>\n

\u201cCreating 40 new seniors\u2019 centres across Ontario will help to improve services for seniors who may be vulnerable, including those living in multicultural, Indigenous and rural communities,\u201d says Damerla.<\/p>\n
