Every summer for more than 30 years, the province of Ontario and its municipalities have been celebrating the role of seniors in our communities. For 2016, the focus turns to seniors making a difference.<\/p>\n

This June, the province\u2019s Senior\u2019s Month turns to the theme of \u201cSenior\u2019s Making a Difference\u201d and will see information sessions, community programs and celebrations taking place across the province.<\/p>\n

For those living in the GTA, several community organizations have come forward to host full day expos and education fairs.<\/p>\n

Starting on June 1 in Mississauga, the city will play host to the Older Adult Expo. In partnership with the Older Adult Advisory Panel (OAAP) and Community Centre Older Adult Committee (CCOAC) the free event will run the full day on June 1 at the Mississauga Sports Zone and include educational sessions, a local senior\u2019s talent show and on-site vendors.<\/p>\n

Also in the GTA, the town of Richmond Hill is hosting a 55+ Barbecue on June 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Free to everyone, the barbecue will also include entertainment from the Blackboard Blues Band.<\/p>\n

As the month goes on, events will be taking place across Southern Ontario, including a Senior Sizzlers Dance hosted by the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association on June 3 at the Evergreen Seniors Community Centre in Guelph, a Seniors Discovery Fair at the North York Central Library in Toronto on June 8, another free barbecue in Courtice at the Courtice Community Complex on June 22, and a Strawberry and Blueberry Social at the Lynwood Park Retirement Community in Otttawa on June 24.<\/p>\n

For those further north, The United Way Bruce Grey Seniors Fair will take over the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound on June 8.\u00a0 The ninth-annual event will include seminars with the Ontario Provincial Police, Alzheimer\u2019s Society, and Elder Abuse Ontario. Stage entertainment will also run throughout the day and the first 300 visitors receive a free flower and gift bag.<\/p>\n

Municipalities across the province have also declared June as Senior\u2019s Month. For more information on events in your community, visit your town or city\u2019s webpage.<\/p>\n
