Seniors can now stay active and more engaged with the community thanks to some new programming.
The province of Ontario has invested in 380 provincial projects through a Community Grant program that will offer programming and services specifically for seniors.
Dipika Damerla, the minister responsible for Seniors Affairs, made the announcement recently at the Idea Exchange in Cambridge, an organization that offers art workshops for seniors in the community.
The program, now in its third year, is the province’s first dedicated solely to supporting seniors. It focuses on initiatives and projects in the non-profit sector.
“We want to empower seniors in Ontario to fully participate in their communities,” says Damerla. “The Seniors Community Grant program encourages community involvement by supporting hundreds of projects focussed on volunteerism, learning, social inclusion and physical activity.”
Successful projects reflect the diversity of Ontario’s seniors and can provide programming at a local, regional or provincial level. Projects include activities such as outreach and support services, training of volunteers, health and fitness programs, and computer literacy.
