Hotdogs and hamburgers on the barbecue are a classic summer staple, but sometimes it can be fun to mix it up on the grill. When it comes to barbecuing, the sky’s the limit.

Hotdogs and hamburgers on the barbecue are a classic summer staple, but sometimes it can be fun to mix it up on the grill. When it comes to barbecuing, the sky’s the limit.

If you’re looking to get adventurous with your summer fare, let Chef Tom Filippou, executive chef for President’s Choice Cooking Schools, be your guide.

“There’s a wide variety of foods that cook well on an open flame and go beyond the traditional,” says Filippou. “Foods like fruit and cheese can take on a whole new flavour when cooked on the grill.”

Expand your barbecue horizons with these unconventional grilling recommendations.

Nectarines – Grilled nectarines make for a perfect summertime appetizer or dessert. The high temperature of the barbecue caramelizes the sugar in the fruit to really bring out the flavour. Pair with goat cheese and walnuts for a savoury dish, or sprinkle with a little brown sugar and honey for a sweet treat.

Pizza – If you are in the mood for pizza but don’t want to heat up the oven, the barbecue is an excellent alternative. A hot grill means perfectly charred spots on the bottom of the crust and a nice crispy bite. Use PC Whole Wheat Naan Rounds as your base instead of traditional pizza dough for a crisp and chewy texture that’s a little different than your classic crust.

Cheese – Halloom is a mild tasting Mediterranean-inspired cheese that can maintain its shape and resist melting which makes it ideal for grilling. It’s a great addition to salad, on a piece of toasted bread or even on its own.

Pound Cake – You may have thought pound cake couldn’t get any better; that is until you’ve tried it grilled. Lightly butter and place on the barbecue for a perfectly toasted texture and flavour. Pair with the grilled nectarines you made earlier and you’ve got the perfect summertime dessert.
