Self publishing has become easier and less expensive today than in the past as more people put ink to paper to tell their life stories. And while some stories are best left to memory, this is one that has spunk.

Gene Gorman was motivated by poverty, and as an eight-year-old, sold Christmas cards door-to-door so he wouldn’t have to rely on his family for money. This job taught him skills he would use for the rest of his life, which included working as a sales trainer and consultant for some of the largest corporations in the United States, like General Motors and AT&T.

His early days were tough. He learned about alcohol from his mother and became a repeat offender at an alcoholic treatment facility. By 30 years of age, he drank his way through a marriage, lost everything, and became homeless. That was his breaking point where he says he “became teachable.” He changed his life after that.

Always a nice addition, there are a good sampling of black and white photographs to depict the author and his family. It’s an interesting story of how one takes tragedy and turns it into success.
